'Zlatan Ibrahimovic Apologised for Receiving Red Card After Romelu Lukaku Spat,' Confirms Milan Boss Pioli

AC Milan manager, Stefano Pioli has confirmed that star player, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has apologised after picking up a red card during their 2-1 loss to rivals, Inter Milan in what was a fiery derby in the quarterfinal of the Coppa Italia on Tuesday.

Milan started the game well with Ibrahimovic giving the visitors the lead on the night in the 31st minute, before tempers frayed with former Manchester United team-mates, Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku locking heads and exchanging words at the end of the first half, before the pair had to be restrained as the players left the pitch for the interval.

The referee had cautioned the duo, but soon gave Ibrahimovic a second yellow and then a red card for a foul on Alexsander Kolarov – which was the first time that the Swede was being sent off in Europe since 2015 when he was with Paris Saint-Germain.

“He [Ibrahimovic] apologised like the great champion he is. He got a bit caught up in the desire to help the team. It wasn’t easy to stay in the game a man down. The pressure from Inter was strong,” Pioli said post the game.

It was not a night to remember for Milan as Christian Eriksen’s late winner ensured that they were knocked out of the competition and will now focus their energies on winning their first Serie A title since 2011.
